Inert US military .54" Burnside cartridge. This very rare cartridge is historically significant as it was the world's first one-piece drawn brass case. It was adopted by the US Army in 1856 and saw service in the Civil War being used in the Burnside carbine. The unique 'Foster pattern' design has a wide belt at the casemouth which contains wax lubricant. The cartridge is loaded in the front of the breech and does not have a primer - there is a tiny hole left in the base of the cartridge and the flash from an external percussion cap passes through this hole igniting the charge. This cartridge is 160 years old and is in excellent condition.
