Brass 1944 dated M26 case with a 1944 M42A1 high explosive projectile. Fitted with a M48 PD fuse with delay facility.
The first Sherman to enter service with the 76mm gun was the M4A1 in July 1944. Designed as an improvement to the existing Shermans medium velocity 75mm Gun M3, the 12.87lb HE projectile had a m/v of 2,700fps and had a maximum range of 14,650yds. By the end of the War roughly half the US Army Shermans in action in Europe were armed with the M1A1 76mm gun.
