The ‘P’ Gun was a development that never managed to go into production. It was meant to be a replacement for the 40mm ‘S’ Gun used as a tank-buster, mounted under the wings of Hurricane aircraft.
This case, for a 47mm round is 326mm long and one of the very first made. The markings on the case show it to have been made by Vickers Armstrong Engineering Ltd (VAEL), in 1943 and from the first batch, LOT 1.
A part of the rim has been milled off and I have no idea whether this was as part of the pre-production trials, or later for an as yet unknown reason.
Information on the ‘P’ Gun project is at: http://quarryhs.co.uk/Pgun.htm
