Inert US military experimental Cal .30" Light Rifle Armour Piercing cartridge made by Frankford Arsenal in 1944. Most collectors will be aware that prior to the adoption of the 7.62mm NATO cartridge in 1954 three caselength variants were trialed...47mm, 49mm & 51mm. However, the very first development in these trials was this Frankford Arsenal design based on the commercial .300 Savage case. This was done simply to test the concept of a shortened assault rifle cartridge. They were loaded with both ball and armour piercing bullets - this example is loaded with a 165gn .30-06 M2 Armour Piercing bullet. This bullet was modified by having an additional cannelure cut to allow it to seat to the correct depth. 48mm caselength. Headstamp 'SUPER-X .300 SAV'
The armour piercing core has been removed.
